Can i take red yeast plus a statin to lower cholesterol?

No: Not a good idea. Red yeast rice is actually a ministatin.- contains a small amount of lovastatin-the first marketed statin. It is not good to mix statins and the addition probably would not benefit you.

Not helpful: Ryr supplements sold in the us cannot by law have more than trace amounts of cholesterol lowering substances (monacolin k which is identical to lovastatin, a statin sold as mevacor). So, (1) not enough statin in ryr supplement to make a difference, and (2) should not mix statins together anyway.
