Could be: It could be a large cavity that has gone into the pulp or nerve of the tooth causing an abscess. It could be that the tooth was hit in an accident in the past and is now abscessed. Maybe you are grinding on that tooth in your sleep. You need to see a dentist asap to find the cause and get it treated.

More than that: Most cavities do not generally cause sensitivity to touch, especially 'extreme' sensitivity. You may have a fractured filling or tooth or more likely the nerve of the tooth is the culprit with a possible infection as well. See you dentist immediately for an accurate diagnosis and treatment before this explodes into an even more serious emergency.
