A member asked:

Is hep c curable if you sto drinking?

5 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

No: Hep c can be suppressed and a patient can be in long term remission with certain medications. Drinking does not influence hep c infection status. The reason to quit drinking if you have hep c is so you do not get liver failure. People who drink and have hep c often get cirrhosis (liver scar) and then get liver failure.

Hepatitis C: This disease can produce severe and permanent damage to the liver and is one of, if not the most common cause of a need for liver transplantation in this country. Alcohol should be avoided in an effort to limit the damage. In individuals who have abused alcohol they will be required to stop drinking before even being place on a list for liver transplant. If undergoing treatment, stop drinking.
