MRI: Because there is no radiation in mri, it is safe. Don't worry about negative health effects. Unless somobody is allergic to gadolinium, a dye may need to be used, which can rarely cause renal impairement. Mri is expensive and not always fun for those who are claustrophobic. Ct scan is worse, can give 200-300 times more radiation than a chest x-ray; the worst one is total body scan.

Yes: Mri is safe in children, and is sometimes used for evaluating unborn children! it does not use ionizing radiation, unlike x-rays or ct.
