Irritation: Smoke is an irritant to the nose and airways and whatever was on the wood may also be an irritant which can cause congestion, mucous production and bronchial irritation exacerbating asthma or causing an acute asthma flair up.

Irritating: Smoke is very irritating to one's airways since it contains multiple chemicals, resins, aside from the ash. Why do you think firemen always wear a mask when fighting fire?
