Lower is better: Generally, <200 is pretty good. Knowing the LDL and HDL would help. But what is considered to be normal depends on your other risk factors.

Not One Size Fit All: There are gen accepted #'s of a total cholesterol<200, LDL<130 or 100, HDL>50 & trig<150 mg/dL. Recently a new set of guidelines were released that are not one size fits all, the "JNC 8" & these were designed to see who needs tx & take into account other risk factors. Based on a complex formula. The calculator is online at: http://tools.acc.org/ASCVD-Risk-Estimator/ Still may to individualize.

It depends on...: Not all cholesterol is equal. Cholesterol is ESSENTIAL for good health; low levels may be more dangerous than high levels! Some forms, esp. small dense LDL, are hazardous and some (HDL) beneficial. The real cause of cardiovascular disease is inflammation so if inflamed cholesterol is a bigger concern.
