How did people in the past survive without nappies/diapers?

Creative thinking: I think researchers have found that prehistoric societies made do with locally available materials.Moss and other readily available materials were gathered and used. But first they had to decide it was worth worrying about. It is likely that the value they placed on odors and hygeine were not quite what we expect. Simply washing out the baby wrap in the closest stream may have been acceptable.
