Herpes zoster: Shingles , also called herpes or varicella zoster, occurs when the v. Zoster virus is reactivated after being dormant within nerve roots since a previous episode of chickenpox. Shingles occurs mainly in people over age 50 and in people with immunosuppressed states that allow the virus to "wake up".
