Pain of any type....: Is a very personal thing, so this question is hard to answer in a comprehensive way. Many patients have described the pain crises to me as gnawing, and making it difficult to find a position of comfort. Others describe sharp pains on a background of constant ache (often focal or multi focal) that won't completely go away, even with powerful opiate analgesics. Best way to learn is to ask a ss pt.

Bad pain: I must admit to never having experienced sickle cell pain personally. My patients tell me that the pain is unbearable. They have told me that the pain can be "sharp, boring, throbbing, stabbing, and most importantly disabling.
