Consult your dentist: Rough edges on any part of a retainer may cause sore spots on the gums. As the tongue interacts with these spots, canker sores can naturally arise. This can be alleviated by returning to your dentist/orthodontist to smooth these edges and provide relief. Any mouth sores should not be ignored, and should always be evaluated by your dental professional.

Sores: Sounds like your retainer needs to be adjusted/replaced/reconfigured/smoothed. Important that you see the Dentist or Orthodontist who made the appliance for you, who best knows why you need a retainer, and what function the retainer is supposed to have in your particular case.
