A few things: Sharp pain and cramping could be dehydration, muscular, vascular or neurologic. Start with fluids, simple stretches of the back, hip and thigh muscles for a few days. If it does not improve or you are getting worse-do not wait, see you doctor.

A female asked:

Sometimes I get the most excruciating sharp pain in my upper thigh, like a safety pin sticking in me..

Thigh pain: there are many causes of this problem. If it is upper thigh might think about meralgia parathestica which is an entrapment of the later femoral cutaneous nerve. This is common in females. Better get that checked out as there are many beneficial treatments for this. Also want to make sure it isnt anything else. Hope this helps.

Muscle tear: Soccer strains the rectus femoris, sounds like you might have a partial tear.
A female asked:

What would cause sudden sharp pain that seems to originate from behind the knee and runs down to mid calf and up to mid thigh?

See below: This actually sounds like sciatica or pain from an irritated nerve root in your lumbar spine. If your leg is hot, swollen, or tender to touch behind the knee or calf then a clot is more likely. I would recommend seeing your physician asap just to be sure.
