A member asked:

I have a friend, that when she spits up mucous it has blood in it? what could this be? is this aerious? she refuses to go to a dr

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Could be serious: Spitting up mucous suggests sinus disease or irritation in the upper respiratoy tract. This usually self resolves within a week or two. But it can become chronic if you smoke ar have ongoing allergies, the other concern is it clearing throat and "spitting" up or is it produced after coughing, which denotes a potentially more serious problem. Either way if not resolved in two weeks see a doctor.
