Microdermabrasion: These procedures, both types of microdermabrasion, serve only to polish the upper layer of skin. There is some contention among some experts that microdermabrasion actually stimulates collagen repair below the epidermis. I personally find in my patients that a monthly microdermabrasion actually does continually polish the skin, increase translucency, and removes minor defects.

Exfoliation: As with any treatment, the results are a combination of the technology and the skill of the practitioner. Microdermabrasion is not intended to do anything other then remove the upper most layers of the skin to effect an advanced exfoliation treatment. However, in practice, microdermabrasion can remove all layers of the skin if applied over aggressively.
