Causes are unknown for this complex disorder, head injury may precipitate symptoms however most cases stem from a history of poor parenting, relationship conflicts, or acute stressors—abrupt occurrences that cause stress. There may be associated personality disorder or mood disorder that can be treated.

Several things: Make kleptomania more likely. A family history of kleptomania, having another mental illness such as bipolar, depression or anxiety disorder, being female, and a history of head trauma all make kleptomania more likely.
