Kleptomania: Heightened impulsivity of this type could be caused by adhd, bipolar illness, defiance (oppositional defiant), chronic sleep deprivation, anxiety or to sustain substance addiction. Sometimes children steal because of lack of food at home or poverty, occasionally by instruction by a parent.

Not really: Kleptomania is catagorgerized as an impulse control disorder. People with this disorder get increasinly anxious before the are to steal something and the stealing relieves the anxiety. Many feel this is related to ocd. It can be helped with cognitive behavorial therapy and frequently ssri antidepressants.

Cause is not known.: High rates of kleptomania in the first-degree relatives of people with kleptomania is reported. However, there are thoughts that there may be a possible genetic link. Kleptomania is an impulse control disorder and is not simply shoplifting.
