See below: In my opinion running is not a good activity for the lower extremity joints but if you shall choose to do so it is your prerogative. Ankle pain associated with running can involve the bones tendons ligaments and joints. This also depends upon your sneaker wear, foot /ankle anatomy, your gait and running style , surface you run on distances you run and when you get the pain and other symptoms you may be having besides pain as you can see this is a very complex issue and is multi factorial a extensive thorough history and physical is necessary to come up with a adequate diagnosis so i cannot inform you if arch supports is all that you need. If i was you i would probably seek out an orthopedic surgeon that specializes in foot and ankle orthopedics.

You can decide : This after trying them. You may decide that you feel so much better that you will want to wear them more of the time as i find with my patients.

Arch supports : Using arch supports as much as you can will support you arch and reduce tension and pull of the tendons causing pain. They should be worn especially with strenuous activity like running. Hope that helps!

Consult you doctor.: You do not need to use them "all the time". Consult with your doctor and see when he or she would like you to use them.
