Many causes of ulcer: A stomach ulcer is literally a hole in the stomach lining. H.Pylori bacteria & use of nsaid's are independent but common risk factors, as are age, tobacco use, & prior history of ulceration. Admission to the ICU can result in stress-related ulceration within the first few days of hospitalization. Also, significant burns (curling's ulcer), head trauma (cushing's ulcer), sheering forces, cancer.
