Alarm may go off: Surgical plates and screws may be detected by airport passenger scanners, so one should carry a doctor's explanation when traveling, in case an alarm is triggered.

Yes: Usually not enough metal to set off detector depends a bit on how many screws , court house detectors are often set more sensitive you can get a card to carry from surgeon or show them your scar I have had zero spine patients have trouble with this although the question is universally asked.
