Work outs: Great input from dr. Khreim & dr. Chand. I am going to look at this from a different perspective. Currently, I am middle aged (ok- maybe I am minimizing a little) & chubby. Frankly, i don't always feel comfortable going to the base gym where there are a bunch of guys with muscles sprouting all over the place, who know how to work every piece of equipment perfectly & who generally like strutting >.

I share your concern: Growing up in california (me) can be tough because appearance is an important part of the culture. I began by working out at home before going to the gym and being intimidated. Once i built up some confidence i went but often wore clothing that was somewhat concealing. Wearing headphones & listening to favorite music helps me to divert my attention/mind from those worries & makes time fly by.

Courage + good music: Your willingness to feel shy and yet work out anyway is a great inspiration to more people than you will ever know. (they may be too shy to tell you!) this morning i heard lucinda williams' "lines around your eyes" and couldn't help but dance in my living room. You might not prefer that particular song, but you can find music that stimulates you naturally, and enjoy the benefits you get!

Effective ActionPlan: Shyness is not same as social anxiety. But shyness (& social anxiety) leads people 2 avoid social situations. Gradual exposure 2those sitn's -easier ones at 1st, then harder-really helps. Suggest coming up w/ step-by-step plan 2help u desensitize urself to working out in front of others - or think of it as "working out with others"?
