X-training benefits: Cross training is a good way to increase overall fitness and prevent overuse injuries (such as "shin splints) in specific body regions. Using various muscle groups and altering the areas of greatest stress on the body during exercise gives muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, etc a chance to recovery between specific workouts. Try biking or swimming.

usually not chronic: Resistance conditioning should help. Try putting a bean bag on the top of your foot and then bending your ankle to lift your toes up. As you lift your toes tip them so the sole of your foot faces outward. That motion should strengthen the muscle that is usually responsible for shin splints. In addition, balancing up on your tip toes is another good exercise to strengthen those muscles.
