What is the difference between aruptured discand a herniated disc?

None: Herniation results from rupture of the annulus fibrosis, the tough outer ring of the disc allowing the inner contents (nucleous) of the disc to extrude.

Pain: When a disc bulges out it is said to be herniated. A herniated disc may cause dysfunction by compression of adjacent nerves in the area. If the disc ruptures during this process, then the disc contents leak out. These are horrendously inflammatory and will set up signficant local pain as as well as cause nerve malfunction. Synonyms: The terms bulging disk, slipped disk, ruptured disc, herniated disk are roughly the same idea that they disc has moved out of place where it should be and possibly compressing nerve or spinal cord. Typically though herniated disk signifies a slight increase in severity of pathology over a bulging disc. It gets a little more specific if terms like disc protrusion and disc extrusion are used.
