Traumatic coma: Coma may be caused by an injury to the brain stem due to the back and forth movement of the head and brain . Other causes include the build up of pressure from brain swelling or hemorrhage, causing brain tissue to herniate across fibrous bands separating the different parts of the brain or through the foramen magnum putting pressure on the brain stem centers for breathing and heart rate.
