Three: Traumatic coma (brain trauma with bleeding or bruising) can improve with time and rehabilitation. Recovery is variable. Metabolic coma (from low blood sugar, low thyroid, liver toxicity, and drugs or alcohol) can be treated if caught in time, and may recover. Lack of oxygen (cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest or drowning) can cause permanent brain damage with coma.
