They don't: The water inhaled in a submersion event is carried deep into the lungs quickly.If the kid has some in a the airways it can be suctioned or coughed out if the kid is responsive enough.The rest will be absorbed through the lung tissue and enter the circulation, much as happends when a baby is born and processes ling fluid.The process can cause significant lung disturbances and needs close monitoring.
