Many mechanisms: Two most common is blowing off anesthetic gases from your lungs and second decrease in concentration of anesthetic, sedative and pain medications in your blood. You will get an oxygen mask immediately after for a little while. Relax, take nice deep breaths in and out and you'll be out of the recovery unit in no time.

See below: Most general anesthetics are given using an inhalational technique. That is to say you are kept asleep by the breathing in of anesthesia gasses. After the operation, as you exhale, you decrease the amounts of these agents in your body until you wake up. Iv anesthetics are removed from your body via the technique of being broken down by enzymes in your body. Hope this helps.
