I have regular periods every month that last 4-6 days. this month, my period is lighter and i am on day 8! what could cause this? i'm 36 - 3kids.

Most likely your: Hormones, estrogen and Progesterone are not balanced , your gyn can do hormones tests and then you have options , also you should get a pelvic ultrasound to r/o intrauterine polyps, thickened tissue or other possible problems.
