Hives treatment: 7 yo child? Hives are an immune response - over reaction - that is usually treated with anti-histamines, Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is one of the most commonly used of these medicaiton. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) often causes drowsiness - so just the opposite is often recommended - not to use during the day - but to use at bedtime - especially if itchy.
