Autoimmune: As is an autoimmune disease and like many of them, there is no cure however there treatments worth talking to your doctor about. Exercise and stretching is key.

Consider TNF meds: While there is no cure, Indomethacin is often not a satisfactory therapy. If there is continued pain have your father discuss the use of tnf agents such as enbrel, Humira or Remicade (infliximab) with a rheumatologist.
