Needs evaluation: Bleeding in pregnancy is common but not normal. All bleeding in pregnancy should be evaluated by a doctor. First they need to confirm you have a pregnancy inside the uterus and not an ectopic pregnancy. Then they need to rule out miscarriage. Then they can evaluate for infection, placental problems or other causes.

There are several reasons why this can happen and miscarriage results in only half the women who experience this. However, it can be a warning sign of a problem and you should contact your obstetrician or midwife as soon as possible.
