A member asked:

Need expert opinion on when drawing blood what can cause the specimen to hemolyze?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Alcohol and trauma: If the alcohol applied to cleanse the skin is not fully dry before drawing blood, it may cause hemolysis. Using too thin a needle also can cause hemolysis. Transferring blood drawn in a syringe to other tubes through a narrow bone needle is an other cause.
