Many : Such as possible tight shoes, entrapment of the deep peroneal nerve in the first intermetatarsal space, nerve impingement in the lower back to name a few.

Causes: Could be sesamoiditis (bones beneath your big toe being irritated), nerve impingement, bunion deformity, joint capsulitis (swelling or irritation of big toe joint), stress fracture (unlikely but must rule out), gout, etc.
