The same : It is still called bipolar disorder but in younger children it is more difficult to diagnose. There are other disorders that can mimic bipolar and it is less likely to be bipolar disorder in a preteen. The treatment for the different disorders is different and the prescription treatment is not without side effects so it is important to be thorough in the evaluation process.

An update from: when this was previously answered. With the advent of DSM V comes some changes in diagnoses. The new diagnosis of Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD) now covers territory once held by childhood bipolar disorder.
