Hiatal hernia: A hiatal hernia associated with gerd, reflux of stomach contents up your esophagus, can cause cough, aspiration pneumonia, asthma like pulmonary problems. You have choice about next step in care. You may benefit from medical care, further testing, egd. Surgery only after good medical care. Start with your regular doc. Be well.

Hiatal hernia: Hh is an anatomic problem, we do not cure it. We have drugs to minimize esophageal reflux in symptomatic patients.

Surgery: It is possible that large hiatal hernias (so called paraesophageal hernias) can cause some respiratory symptoms. The only "cure" is surgical repair, and this should be done by a general or thoracic surgeon experienced in laparoscopic repair. A full evaluation is necessary to see if operation is right for you - it may not be. Hope this helps!
