Many possible causes: A thinning macula is alarming. I wonder if this is a loose comment or a true medical finding. How did your eye doctor diagnose your thinning macula? Did he refer you to a retinal specialist?

Thinning macula: May refer to the loss of pigment or to a general decrease in thickness as occurs in many macular diseases in addition to macular degeneration. The macula can be assessed with a very rapid non invasive test called oct. This could resolve whether you do have pathologic (bad) thinning or whether it is just natural changes in pigment that occur as we get older. See a retinal specialist!

Hard to say: Macular thinning is not a diagnosis. I am not sure what an eye doctor means by that, despite being a retina specialist. It is best to try and get more precise information , both relating to diagnosis and treatment from you doctor.
