"efficacy vs safety": The best overall treatment for atopic dermatitis is proper use of moisturiers which have no side effects but are not as effective as topical steroids or "tci's" (topical calcineurin inhibitors) . An allergist or dermatologist may be best qualified to decide which med would be appropriate.

Advantages: Sorry, there are no disadvantages for treating eczema. See your doctor for appropriate topical and oral therapy. Also, allergy testing can help because food and pollens (indoor and outdoor) can cause or flare eczema.
