Common problem: As many as a 3rd of women will be found to carry gbs in their genital tract at any given time.It is a common germ found in the bowel and occasionally causes uti's in women. Newborns who are exposed can develop blood poisoning, pneumonia and progress rapidly to a fatal outcome. In the us, women carrriers get IV antibiotics in labor and the newborns are monitored. Most do quite well.
