Lump under jaw: The most common cause of this would be a lymph node lump. These are part of your immune system and help you fight infections. If you've had an ear, or dental infection, etc., they can swell up for a while then go back down on their own. A very large lymph gland, usually not tender, can be a sign of lymphoma, not highly related to smoking. Salivary gland cysts are another benign cause.

Maybe a lymph node: It could be a lymph node, which is part of the immune system that swells in response to infection. It may also be your submandibular gland which makes saliva. If you are a smoker, you are also at higher risk for cancers, which can also show up as persistent swollen lymph nodes.
