Varies: Some people take otc pain pills, some stay out of light, others take prescription medications. I feel this will vary per individual and each individuals tolerance to pain. You should go to your doctor for definitive treatment plans and see if you can find out why you are having the migranes and potentially stop them all together.

Approaches: Fastest way to stop, if used early in sumatriptan injection, followed by nasal sprays, such as zomig, (zolmitriptan) followed by oral agents, and there are many. If beyond 1 hour in duration, maybe Cambia or and ergotamine will be more successful. As stated, your best bet is to prevent headaches, i.e., "no be there when headache is scheduled to arrive".
