Depends on variables: A mother experiencing a primary herpes infection in early pregnancy may suffer fetal loss. If she had herpes in the past and it goes dormant, she can have a normal pregnancy and baby. Many will schedule a c-section around term to reduce the risk of baby being exposed to herpes that may be shedding in the birth canal. That shedding could result in a baby infection at a few weeks of age.
