Does mother having constipation affect baby, when mother is breastfeeding?

Makes her grumpy: Lactating moms often iron supplements, which can cause constipation. The constipation doesn't have any direct effect on baby when mother is breast feeding except that it can make mom grumpy (which is not to be taken lightly). Drink plenty of fluids and eat lots of fiber and/or take fiber supplements. A stool softener can also be helpful. See your doc if it gets to be a real problem.

No: Well, i don't believe there have been any studies that demonstrate any adverse effect of constipation in a breastfeeding mother to her baby. It's not good to have it, though, for other reasons!

No: Breast fed babies naturally pass stools less frequently. They may go several weeks without stooling, and as long as they are comfortable, no treatment is recommended. Babies can get milk protein allergies when milk proteins cross the mother's breast milk, but bloody mucousy diarrhea is more common than constipation in those instances.
