what impact can nutrition and diet have on emphysema?

Significant: A diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables reduces the sensation of breathlessness. Advancing emphysema causes significant weight loss. Nutritional support is highly recommended.

Avoid malnutrition: People with bad lung disease need to avoid becoming underweight. Many lose weight due to the calorie burning nature of heavy breathing and once all the body fat is gone the patient may start losing the muscle mass they need to breathe. Within reason, people who weight more live longer with severe lung disease.
Dr. Rada Ivanov

Significant: You need to take in enough protein and fat so your respiratory muscles can have enough energy to work and regenerate; and limit the carbohydrates as COPD lungs have trouble eliminating carbon dioxide, which is their end-product. There are food supplements specialized for copd.
Dr. Dean Giannone
Internal Medicine 25 years experience
Helpful not curative: Emphysema is a destructive and ultimately hypermetabolic process so adequate nutrition is required to prevent scavenging of the body in general. Adequate amounts of protein are necessary to maintain the body's protein stores and muscular strength. At least one gram of protein per kilogram of body weight.

Can my diet while breastfeeding prevent my baby's allergies?

Dr. Lawrence Rosen
Pediatrics 28 years experience
No: Most current research does not support the idea that specific food avoidance can prevent food allergies in babies. However, if you are sensitive or someone in your direct family is allergic to a specific food (i.e. Peanuts), it may make sense to wait til at least 1 year old to introduce this food.

Must my child eat a balanced diet every day?

1 doctor answer2 doctors weighed in
Dr. James Ferguson
Pediatrics 46 years experience
Good luck trying: The balanced diet is an adult idea, & a good one to practice for your lifetime. However it is a bit impractical when you deal with kids. Breast milk is balanced, but get past weaning & you must deal with a kid with his/her own ideas about eating. I like to look on kids from the vantage point of a balanced week rather than meal or day. Before school age their brain directs their cravings & does ok.

Exercise : Adding exercise and self control by reducing portion intake and eating the right foods while counting calories is best. Increase fruit and fiber intake if not eating enough. Take a yoga course or start swimming if not already. Good, low impact exercises. If considering surgical options, know that the best procedures and surgtons usually require that one starts losing weight first.
