A 32-year-old female asked:

what does an urachal duct cyst means and how is it cured?

Remnant of the past: Long before we are born, we have a connection between our bladder and umbilical cord. It's a tube called the urachal duct. It shrivels away and becomes a tiny empty remnant of a duct as a baby develops and matures. In a few people, part of the duct remains and can have some fluid inside it... Which is called a cyst. The cyst may enlarge over time (sometimes get infected). Surgery removes the cyst.

Duct cyst: Usually this causes a persistant drainage from the belly button. This can usually be evaluated by a general surgeon. Sometimes an ultrasound is used. They can be fixed with an operation like na umbilical hernis surgery.

Is my bra causing blocked ducts?

Dr. Shannon Cole
Pediatrics 25 years experience
No: Most likely not. Sometimes certain ducts just block easily or don't release as others. I recommend feeding on the side with the blocked ducts first when the infant is sucking the most vigorously. This helps open the ducts. Other options are heat and ibuprofen. If that doesn't help discuss with your OB or pediatrician. Seek medical care if breast redness or heat or pain.

Generally, I would agree, although one should be careful with any overly restrictive bras, especially those involving under-wires.

A 29-year-old member asked:

Can the cracks heal and form scars that will obstruct the milk ducts?

Dr. Lillian Schapiro
Obstetrics and Gynecology 30 years experience
Usually cracks heal: I recommend lanolin cream. After nursing, rub your breast milk on your nipples and allow it to dry. Your breasts need "air time." leaving them open to oxygen will help the healing process.
