Dosage adjusment: Many, but not all, anticonvulsants - like other meds - are metabolized (broken down for elimination) by the liver. Some adjustment of dosage of the medication in the presence of liver disease may be necessary. For a few, avoidance of the medication is best. A neurologist should give the best advice.

Metabolism: Many anti-epileptic drugs are metabolized via liver systems, and this creates a need to monitor levels, if bad liver disease is present. A far simpler approach is to use meds which are passed through the kidney, and these include, keppra, vimpat, (lacosamide) neuron tin, lyrica, discuss with your neurologist as which is best for you.
