Not a good choice: The ointment in bactroban (mupirocin) may be soothing, but bactroban (mupirocin) is an antibiotic for a bacterial infection. Herpes is a virus and there are other treatments for it.

Antiviral: Valtrex (valacyclovir) or another antiviral pill will help genital herpes resolve more quickly. Bactroban ointment is sometimes used to treat crusted areas as an adjunct for secondary bacterial infections.
