As human beings: I work with people with bi-polar the same way that i work with all my clients, as human beings. Each client is different, but with bipolar 1, they usually need to be on medication asap. Their lives are often in great turmoil & without medication they cannot get things back in line. I also will encourage them to have both individual & couple sessions, since their partner's input it important.

Seek support: While not intentional, individuals with bipolar mood disorders can at times place strain on their relationships. Often the best path is to show them compassion and grace, set boundaries and limits where needed, and take care of yourself. The national alliance for mental illness (nami) is an excellent resource for education and support for those who love someone with a mental illness.
