Safety of PICC line: Peripherally inserted central venous catheter (picc) is safe when it is inserted by an experienced operator. An x-ray should always be done to confirm proper location of a picc. Rarely, a catheter may be inserted into an artery instead of a vein in an infant and major complications may develop. There is also a small risk infection if the catheter stays in place for many weeks.
