Variety of reasons: It's all about hormones. The menstrual cycle hormone dance is very precise and any glitch can effect the menstrual period. Absence of ovulation, ovarian cysts, stress, and a myriad of other things can effect menstrual flow. This is usually not a problem unless it is recurrent. Contraceptive hormones (bcp) have this effect and are one of the benefits of ovulation suppression.
