Time: Depending on the severity and the type of reaction, the time may vary from a day to a few weeks. For most patients developing a rash or hives from penicillin, taking an otc antihistamine 3 to 4 times a day (much higher dose than used in hay fever) may be helpful . Others may need a short course of prednisone. For anaphylaxis, injectable epinephrine. Assumed you have stopped taking the drug.
