Similar: Bipolar 2 illness has periodic depressions and some periods of mild mania. Bipolar depression just refers to the depressed part of the mood swings.

Episode vs type: Bipolar 2 is the disease, often with hypomanic or mixed episodes rather than frank manic episodes. "bipolar depression" is simply a depressive episode for someone who has bipolar i or bipolar ii disease.

Bipolar: Bpd is full-blown manic depression. Bp2 is milder form and shows hypomanic instead of manic episodes. Also, sometimes rapid cycling is referred to as bp2 or cyclothymia.
