No protection? Yes!: There are days during the cycle that are more or less likely to conceive, but all days have some possibility. If this is okay, then it is okay. If not, use some form of seriously effective birth control. Also, remember that even some effective birth control methods do not protect you from stds. Get some good information - at a clinic, your doctor, online. It's out there! be well!

Very low chance: It's too late to get pregnant 4 days before your period. In a 28 day cycle, ovulation happens on day 14 and the fertile window is around the time of ovulation. Sperm can live for 2-3 days, therefore if intercourse happens earlier than the fertile window, pregnancy may still happen. Therefore i agree with dr. Weixel that a good form of contraception is needed to avoid pregnancy if that is your goal.

Anything is possible: However, during a standard 28 day cycle w/day 1 as 1st day of your period, ovulation occurs on day 14. In actuality, ovulation occurs 14 days prior to menses (b/c no fertilization occurred) so variability in length of period is actually in time prior to ovulation. In any case, sperm can live for several days so you can get pregnant from sex a few days prior to ovulation. But what if "period" is.
